New businessmen should emulate late owner of Komala Vilas

It is with great sadness that a selfless, dedicated and unassuming philanthropist within the Indian business fraternity was lost . I personally knew Mr Rajoo Gunasekaran during the last two decades of his life's journey, which had ups and downs. To many, he was a silent hero who did not embrace publicity. He extended help to the underprivileged without any hesitation. He never turned down anyone who approached him for assistance. I had the privilege of witnessing him help set up new businesses and help many budding businessmen in every possible manner.  바카라검증사이트 He did not like to be highlighted or have his good deeds mentioned. He always told me: "God will bless good souls." But I never imagined he would depart this world so soon. New businessmen should emulate him. Apart from focusing on and caring about their businesses, they should give back to society in every small way. Mr Gunasekaran was gentle, cool and calm in his approach to his customers. He address...

Couples should not wait till it's too late to start a family

I empathise with the couples who are spending large sums to boost their chances of becoming parents despite the odds stacked against them ( Couples trying to conceive hope for more financial help, Dec 25 ). The report reminds us once again of the fertility crisis our nation faces, and it is timely to remind the younger generation, who don't have to contend with the burden of genetic problems beyond their control, about how their lifestyle choices may be affecting their chances of childbearing. The fertility rate for Singapore last year was 1.14 births per woman. This is way below the replacement level.  Young graduates in their late 20s are busy pursuing a higher degree or trying their best to climb the corporate ladder, and blissfully leave the issue of marriage on the back burner.  바카라 Health authorities and fertility experts commonly point out that women over the age of 35 and men over 40 will find it increasingly difficult to produce a child. Pregnancy ove...

Step up education on food wastage among children

I read with alarm that the amount of food waste generated in Singapore has risen by about 20 per cent over the past 10 years and is expected to increase ( Turning trash to treasure , Dec 27). To stop food wastage, it is crucial to start educating Singaporeans from a young age. The Ministry of Education can add a chapter about food wastage in the primary school science syllabus. Primary school pupils are taught about decomposition, so why not enhance the topic by teaching them how to upcycle food waste?  바카라사이트 As for secondary school students, during their Food and Consumer Education lessons, teachers can teach them how to prepare just enough food, plan their grocery shopping list and use ugly food, along with other ways to avoid wasting food. Since most schools have small gardens, they should make full use of them by establishing co-curricular activities where students can learn how to convert food waste into fertiliser. The fertiliser can be given to residents nearby or so...

Encourage meat alternatives to curb future pandemics

The director-general of the World Health Organisation has rightly pointed out that animal welfare and climate change are factors to note in the next pandemic ( Covid-19 will not be the last pandemic: WHO chief , Dec 28). Implementing safe management measures, stringent quarantines or even having a vaccine do not address the cause of viral outbreaks. These steps are reactive in nature. Scientifically, much has been written by experts on how our current model of raising animals for food - with vast numbers of stressed animals kept in close proximity indoors - is a hotbed for pathogens to erupt, mutate and spread, and for novel viral strains to be created.  바카라사이트 Climate change, which is related to animal farming, causes hitherto dormant harmful micro-organisms to be activated. This can lead to the spread of new diseases and future pandemics. In our quest to surmount Covid-19, we should use this moment as an inflection point and make meat alternatives mainstream to address the...
