Making sure Singapore workforce is globally competitive

Image
We refer to the Forum letter,   "Find out why firms prefer to hire foreign professionals" (Feb 27) . There are valid reasons why employers still hire foreign professionals even as we continue to strengthen the Singaporean core. First, Singapore, a global financial centre, is home to 46 per cent of Asia's regional headquarters, and these companies would base their professionals, whether Singaporeans or foreigners of different nationalities, here to serve their regional and global operations. Second, foreign professionals help Singapore to seize new business opportunities or to grow new industries quickly, while we develop Singaporeans for these new job opportunities. This strategy has enabled Singapore to grow industries like electronics and pharmaceuticals. Third, even as capabilities are transferred to locals through the many schemes and programmes, there will always be a skills shortage in new growth areas. For example, the infocomm sector employs around 200,000 profe...

Businesses committed to Singaporean core, but cannot be anti-foreigner

Image
We thank Mr Jeffrey Law Lee Beng for his letter ( Find out why firms prefer to hire foreign professionals , Feb 27). Amid the many challenges posed by Covid-19, Singaporeans are understandably concerned with manpower competition and employment security. The majority of businesses in Singapore are committed to recruiting fairly based on merit and growing a strong Singaporean core. Earlier this year, 29 trade associations and chambers representing a wide spectrum of Singapore's economy issued a joint statement underlining the business community's commitment to fair hiring and employment practices.  While there are a minority of companies that may not yet practise fair hiring, they are not representative of the majority of businesses that strive to adopt progressive human resource practices and support the development of Singaporeans.  카지노사이트 We must not overlook the reality that Singapore is a small country with a limited workforce. For Singapore to sustain its economic g...

Make clearing one's own table a way of life

Image
The Public Hygiene Council (PHC) fully supports the Clean Tables Campaign launched by the National Environment Agency on Feb 6. A national campaign is timely. It will reinforce the work that the PHC has been doing all these years, with institutions and business operators across the public, private and people sectors to persuade and educate the public on cleanliness and good hygiene habits in public places. Used tissues and food waste left on the table are potential biohazards. These pose a threat to the people who have to clear these up when we leave them behind on the table. Thus, cleaning up one's own table can potentially minimise the risk of infectious diseases spreading. The cleaners can then focus on their work to clean and disinfect tables, as well as sort and distribute trays and crockery to the stalls.  카지노사이트 The PHC also thanks Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor for explaining so clearly why clearing tables ours...

What checks are there against changes to insurance contract terms?

Image
Dr Tony Ho's letter is most telling indeed ( Long-term patients had to look for new doctor on insurers' approved lists , Feb 22). Unless more experiences are shared openly, policyholders may not realise the consequences of such restrictions. Healthcare costs may or may not be reined in, but what is certain is the odds are unfairly stacked against existing policyholders. The feedback loop of market forces is non-existent since policyholders can't change insurers like how they can with car insurers. It is most unfair to restrict existing policyholders without placing restrictions on insurers as well.  카지노사이트 In the notification letter my insurer sent me, it was explained that the new changes are to encourage policyholders to play a more active role in choosing their medical providers and treatments. How can policyholders encourage insurers to ensure sufficient and fair choices in the first place? Section 3 of the Unfair Contract Terms Act has a clause that says businesses c...

Preparation for retirement is personal responsibility

Mr Sherman Goh Keng Hwee articulated some relevant aspects of retirement, and his suggestion for a national body to prepare people for retirement is a novel idea ( Set up national body to prepare people for retirement , Feb 19). However, as a retiree, I feel that preparation for retirement should be a personal responsibility. It is a phase of life which is inevitable, and one has many years to prepare for it, if one starts planning early. Careful, thorough and purposeful planning is critical for a happy, fulfilling and rewarding retirement.  바카라사이트 We can start by believing that life is a journey, and retirement is part of this journey. Ultimately, it boils down to mental preparedness, notwithstanding the importance of financial adequacy, although many well-heeled people are afraid to retire for fear of losing power, status, connections, recognition, relevance and a sense of self-worth. Some people see retirement as the end of life, an undesirable phase, one which is unknown...

Small charity organisations strengthen social safety net

Image
I refer to the letter by Mr Ang Ah Lay ( Consider having fewer charities for economies of scale , Feb 16). Although he was making a general observation, I felt I should respond as the Muslim Kidney Action Association was mentioned. While there may be merit to the suggestion of reducing the number of charity organisations through suitable amalgamation of smaller ones, it may be useful to look at the larger picture. In the landscape of community service and social service work, there must be room for large charities as well as small ones to coexist on the principle of "many hands make light work".  카지노사이트 This is also to ensure there are sufficient overlapping safety nets provided by large, medium and small charities to ensure that no one falls through the cracks and gets left behind. It's true that small charities do face challenges in reaping the benefits of economies of scale. But smaller charities can be more nimble and serve niche needs. Smaller charities just have t...

Several ways for social service agencies to ensure efficient services

We thank Mr Ang Ah Lay for his views on the suitable amalgamation of charities ( Consider having fewer charities for economies of scale , Feb 16), and Mr Ameerali Abdeali for his response on the role of small charities in the community service landscape ( Small charity organisations strengthen social safety net , Feb 18). The National Council of Social Service (NCSS) currently has more than 490 social service agencies (SSAs) and partner organisations registered as its members. Prior to attaining NCSS membership, SSAs are already established entities such as societies or companies limited by guarantee, each with its mission and Constitution in place.  바카라사이트 The social service sector comprises dedicated and passionate staff, volunteers and board members. Many of these SSAs start small, and enjoy the autonomy and nimbleness to serve the (sometimes niche) communities they feel strongly for. We agree with Mr Ameerali that charities of different sizes and characters play a differ...
